The Thornton Islamic Society was formed in 1998 to see to the ever growing need for the social welfare, spiritual and educational needs of the Muslim community in the Thornton area.
The TIS was established as an Non Profit Organisation and has constantly strived to see to the needs of the growing Muslim community in Thornton.
Thornton has now developed into a multi-racial and multi-cultural suburb, and the Muslims of Thornton have proudly taken their niche in this community.
The current facility which is used by the Muslims of Thornton, is on a long term lease by the City of Cape Town and as such, is not an established Masjid.
It is in this that the TIS is in a constant endeavour to firstly, obtain land for a place of worship and thereafter build a Masjid for the community of Thornton, insha-Allah.
Sheikh Moeneeb Sha has been the Imam of the Thornton Islamic Society facility since 2018, taking over from previous Imam Hassan Kriel.
Brother Haroon Khalid has been the caretaker Imam of the Thornton Islamic Society facility since 2018.
Our Madrassah starts accepting children from Grade 1 onward (7 years of age).
The classes are held every Saturday from 10am till 12pm.
Registration for 2025 is now open and we will be having a registration day at the Masjid on 18 January 2025 @ 10am-11am.
